22 June: Scything have-a-go at the ‘Real’ Hay Festival 2pm-4:30 pm. Newchapel, Llanidloes (Free)

This is suitable for beginners, skilled scythers and everyone in between. Learn about the traditional harvest and take part in the hay harvest at this beautiful meadow. Festival runs 14:00-21:00. Email hand.powered@yahoo.com to book your place or turn up on the day.


22 June: 'Real' Hay Festival at Newchapel, Llanidloes 1pm -late (Free)

This midsummer celebration is brimming with free activities and workshops for children and adults. The star of the show will be Barbara with her working horses. All activities are free and there will be a number of food stalls, bar as well as stalls selling plants, crafts etc. Please bring a re-usable plate, cup and knife and fork, and bring your own picnic and kite for the mid afternoon kite flying extravaganza. Don't miss the amazing line-up of music from 5:30pm.


29-30 June: 2- day Scything Course, Llanveynoe, near Hay on Wye, £150 per person

This scything course will cover set-up, mowing technique and maintenance of the Austrian scythe. Suitable for beginners and improvers. We will give you a range of blades to try and will provide technical knowledge to allow you to scythe a variety of vegetation types easily and effectively. As there are two tutors present on both days, attendees have the option of attending either day as a 1-day course, or can do both days and on the Sunday there will be more in-depth peening tuition and a session on hand hay-making. A single-day booking will cost £75 per person per day. Camping available onsite.


20 July: Scything Workshop, Tymhorau Dyfi, Machynlleth (£75)

This scything course will cover set-up, mowing technique and maintenance of the Austrian scythe. The site will give attendees the opportunity to learn to scythe a range of vegetation types, from bracken to meadow. For more info and to book, please contact events@tymhorau.cymru.

7 September: Besom Broom making, Belan Bluebell Woods, Llanidloes, (£79)

Learn to make your very own witches' broom, made from natural materials off the farm. Only using hand-tools, we'll take you through steps so you can take home your very own traditional broom. Belan Bluebell Woods is a magnificent site with glamping, camping and other overnight stay options. Please get in touch if you'd like to book camping before or after the course. The facilities are eco-friendly and luxurious and there is space under cover if the weather is too wet to work outside. The views and the country air are really special, and Suzi our host looks after us really well with free tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the day.

28 September: Foraging course, Belan Bluebell Woods, Llanidloes, (£79)

Come and learn about the bounty of the autumn hedgerows with us. Join us on a walk where we'll harvest some ingredients for our campfire cookery session. 16 November: Wattle Hurdle-Making Workshop. Belan Bluebell Woods, Llanidloes, (£79)

Learn to make a beautiful hazel hurdle using only hand-tools. Hurdles were used in the past to fold sheep overnight. Nowadays, they're used for gardens, path edging etc. Learn to weave the wattle with us and learn the ancient skills of green woodworking.
